MOOR MOTHER WOODY SHAW (FEAT. MELANIE CHARLES)

Barely a week after releasing an album as 700 Bliss, Philadelphia polymath Camae Ayewa announces a new Moor Mother album Jazz Codes, a companion piece to last year's phenomenal Black Encyclopedia Of The Air. Today she releases new single 'Woody Shaw (feat. Melanie Charles)': opening with swirling synths the track leads into a smooth and mellow section featuring Melanie Charles backing vocals before dropping into more urgent and dissonant jazz squall, all anchored by Camae's distinctive voice and poetry. The track is less electronics and noise heavy compared to previous records under the Moor Mother moniker (she has many) and suitable for an album named Jazz Codes is more reminiscent of her work with improv jazz group Irreversible Entanglements, the record features many of her collaborators from that band. Camae describes the new record as: “It’s poetry that drives this album. The stories of these artists and countless others not named but felt is the leading motivation. I wanted to honor and give offerings, hold them in my body, dream with them, send sweetness.” Jazz Codes will be released early on the 1st of July on ANTI- Records. -Toby Evans-Jesra
